Ever found yourself in front of the mirror, taking a closer inspection, and suddenly thinking, "Hey, when did this change?"

That's exactly what happened to me when I was a little over 30. One morning, stepping out of the shower, I reached for my usual moisturizer, ready for my tried-and-true routine, when it dawned on me—my skin wasn't the same as it used to be.

It was like, overnight, my skin decided to mix things up, challenging everything I thought I knew about skincare.

It's quite the realization, isn't it? We adapt our wardrobes, our hobbies, and even our Netflix preferences as we grow, yet somehow expect our skincare routine to remain a constant, loyal friend throughout the years.

But here's the truth: the strategies and products that were perfect in our 20s might not be doing us any favors as we step into our 30s.

That’s why I've put together a straightforward list of 10 skincare habits to break free from in your 30s. Believe me, your skin will be better for it!

1. Skipping Sunscreen

I can't stress this enough—sunscreen is your best friend! Gone are the days when basking in the sun all day long was a summer goal.

Now, wearing sunscreen daily is a must to prevent aging and shield our skin from UV damage. And I’m talking about slathering on a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, rain or shine.

A good sunscreen to use is this one from Paula’s Choice. It's mineral-based, which I prefer over chemical sunscreens for a bunch of reasons, and it comes with a slight tint.

This means not only are you protecting your skin, but you’re also getting a bit of coverage that can even out your complexion without feeling heavy or cakey.

2. Neglecting the Neck and Décolletage

Remember, your skincare routine shouldn’t stop at your jawline. Our neck and décolletage are often in the spotlight and can show signs of aging just as much as our faces.

Here’s how to keep these areas looking as youthful as your glowing face:

  • Extend your skincare routine down to your neck and chest.

  • Use gentle upward strokes when applying products.

3. Over-exfoliating

Exfoliation—the fine line between glowing and going too far. While shedding those dead skin cells feels fantastic, overdoing it can lead to a damaged skin barrier.

Here's how to keep things balanced:

  • Limit exfoliation to once or twice a week.

  • Listen to your skin. If it feels irritated, take a break.

4. Sticking to the Same Products Year-Round

Our skin’s needs change with the seasons, so why shouldn’t our skincare? Using the same heavy moisturizer in the summer as you do in the winter might not be doing you any favors.

How often should you go? At least once a year for a check-up, or more frequently if you have specific concerns.

We all have that one product we can’t seem to part with, but using expired skincare or makeup is a recipe for irritation and breakouts.

  • Mind Your Diet: You are what you eat, right? Well, your skin certainly thinks so. Foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins C and E, and omega-3 fatty acids can do wonders for your complexion. Think colorful fruits, veggies, and flaxseeds.


  • Stress Less: Easier said than done, I know. But stress can wreak havoc on your skin, leading to breakouts and even accelerating aging. Find your calm with whatever chills you out—be it yoga, meditation, or just a good old-fashioned bubble bath.
